OUGD601 | COP3: Group Crits - 'Practical Element Discussion'

Within these Crit groups we were discussing our ideas of our COP3 Practical element. In groups we went round explaining our practical concepts and our essay in case we needed some further help for ideas for our COP3 project.

Below are the sketches of my practical that I showed to them, the sketches were the logo for  the sustainable sandwiches packaging design and the Illustrative animal designs for the sandwich packaging.

There were a maximum of five people in the group. The feedback from my group that they gave me for my COP3 subject was the following:

  • Overall, they approved for my practical ideas/concept as they said it is appropriate for children. Which are mainly the targeted audience for the COP3 project.
  • With the designs that I showed them, the logo inspired by the Ampersand (&). They responded to keep it natural, stay away from animals.
  • Look into supermarket brands, drop an email to big companies and asks about their target audience for ready made sandwiches packaging.
  • With the sustainable material to cover the sandwiches, paper would be the most suitable as it is widely used. Instead of moulding a specific shape e.g. triangular box. It maybe easier to wrap the sandwich.
  • Instead of illustrations of animals, maybe illustrating vegetables would be more reasonable for children to understand. Also relating to the organic and natural product concept.
  • Watching 'Blue Planet' looks into the consumption, recyclable materials and waste.
  • In addition, they approved our extracting natural food colouring to stamp on the paper material designs on the homemade environmentally recycling paper.
Questions I asked to my group:
  1. Any good sustainable design theorist which will create a stable triangulation / argument? Any that you can suggest?
  2. Any other ideas on how to create sustainable packaging other than using paper materials?
  3. Do you think my practical a sustainable sandwich lunch box, which is aimed for children. If the packaging is educational enough would be a strong brief?
  4. Any other design inspiration other than an 'Ampersand, &' for a logo design?
  5. Do you know any other form of sustainable packaging is current and effective?
